Our Mission Statement at Sommerville is to develop lifelong learners who are adaptable, responsible, caring and who always try to do and be their best. One of the most unique aspects of the Sommerville academics programme can be seen in our efforts to develop each child as a complete, unique individual by addressing the development of the whole child, not just their academic development. This is achieved by the implementation of programmes in Physical Education and The Arts.
Sommerville is a member of the Private Schools Athletic Association and maintains a strong Athletics programme such that our students have the opportunity to enjoy participation in competitive sports events with other private schools. We have established a number of school teams and we are very proud of their achievements. These events provide opportunities for students who are particularly proficient in sports to demonstrate their abilities, become recognized by other students and to develop their self-esteem.
Our Arts programme is unique. There are very few schools who can boast the calibre of achievement seen in our students in this area. Music, Drama and Art are all areas of self-expression and are an integral part of a child’s academic and personal development. The Arts provide an excellent opportunity to develop one’s creativity and self-discipline, which is an increasingly important aspect of the academic and working world. Arts and performance activities develop self-confidence and self esteem and often provide opportunities for excellence in those students who do not enjoy academic or physical successes.
Computer and Information Literacy is an important objective within the curriculum at Sommerville Manor. As we prepare our students for today's “eBusiness” world, it is essential that they become both familiar and comfortable with modern technology. The Technology programme at Sommerville Manor is designed to familiarize students with a wide range of software applications, academic e-learning tools, presentation and information management strategies, while promoting awareness and a modern, critical understanding of our technology-driven society.
