Having established a solid foundation in the primary grades, the students in grades 4 to 8 are ready to explore, create and develop their personal attributes through a varied and stimulating curriculum. Opportunities for individual growth are abundant. Students develop and refine their leadership skills and personal responsibility as they work towards their goal of independent learning in preparation for the High School years. This goal is made more realistic by the implementation of a rotary system throughout these grade levels. This system provides the students not only with a variety of teachers who present different subject areas, but also with the opportunity to develop personal responsibility for their work and the ability to develop planning strategies which enhance their learning capabilities.
The Junior & Intermediate (grades 4-8) curriculum at Sommerville is divided into distinct subject areas Academic subjects include English, Mathematics, Science, French, Social Studies (History & Geography) each of which is being taught at an enhanced level. In each of these subject areas curriculum material is presented to the students in such a manner as to take into account the varying levels of ability within each classroom. Not all students perform at the same level; each child is a unique human being with individual strengths and weaknesses; children learn in different ways and need to be given the opportunity to succeed and be challenged at their own level. Sommerville programmes provide each of our children with this important opportunity.
