High academic standards begin with qualified staff. Our teachers have been carefully selected for their traditional teaching values, their respect for the importance of their role and their understanding of the learning styles of children. The result is a dynamic teaching approach which is consistent throughout the school and supports and reflects the Sommerville Manor Philosophy.
Sommerville teachers are highly qualified professionals with varying levels of qualification including, Undergraduate degree plus Bachelor of Education and Ontario Teachers’ Certificate as well as additional qualifications in specific areas such as Special Education. Our Pre-school and Junior Kindergarten classes are staffed by Early Childhood Educators or equivalent.
Teachers at the Junior and Intermediate levels have been chosen for their area of specialty. As the timetable at this level is designed on a rotary basis the teachers can enjoy the luxury of teaching that subject matter in which they have a high personal interest and in which they have concentrated the majority of their advanced academic training. The benefits to the students are two-fold in that they can enjoy the advantage of experiencing a variety of teaching styles, and at the same time receive the ultimate benefit of learning from an expert.
Sommerville Manor staff takes pride in getting to know those students outside of their regular teaching areas. Shared lunch and recess duties are designed to familiarize students with all staff. The result is a warm, friendly and intimate environment conducive to learning.
