Activities

In addition to a strong academic program, Sommerville Manor students are involved in many other activities that add to their school experience.  These opportunities are provided to students so that they can learn from direct experiences outside of the traditional academic program. These activities are a crucial part of the students' school experience and provide opportunities for them to develop self-confidence, leadership, character and friendships with other students.

Apart from the well known co-curricular activities such as school clubs and sports, Sommerville Manor also offers students a chance to participate in fundraising, dramatic plays, concerts, a visual arts show, a selection of choirs, student council, Science Expo and more.  Some of these activities are discussed below and their significance highlighted.

Fundraising for Charitable Organizations

Perhaps no other activity holds as much significance for the participants and the recipients than fundraising.  From the school's inception in 1992, students, parents and teachers have been raising funds for many and various charitable organizations, including:

Concerts and Plays

We value artistic, athletic and academic opportunities to educate the whole child.  Students have ample opportunities to explore their potential in dramatic, vocal and instrumental performances.  Each year the school organizes a variety of concerts and plays in which students take part.  There are several choirs for students to join as well as a Drama club.

Annual Science Expo

Every February, all students in grades 4 through 8 participate in the Science Expo.  Students choose topics from the curriculum and are closely guided through the scientific process in order to gain new knowledge or confirm existing theories and laws.  Controlled experiments or demonstrations are designed and results recorded using a systematic process.  The culminating experience is an exposition of all students' science projects in the school gymnasium.  Parents and students are invited to the Expo over a two day period.

Student Council

Participation in student government gives children an opportunity to explore many important concepts and skills.  Students experience the full democratic process of nomination, campaigning, speech making, debating, and voting.  All activities are supervised by teaching staff who play a key role in providing guidance to student representatives, just as real politicians are guided by counselors, ministers, aides, and deputies.  Student council provides numerous opportunities for students to engage in leadership roles.
