Admissions
Our primary goal in the admission
process is twofold. First, can the prospective student's needs
be properly met. Second, will the student be a good fit with the school's values, rigorous academic program, and behavioural
standards. The determination of this goal is made via the following
process:
-
Comprehensive tour
of the school facility
-
Interview with
parent and child by the Principal and/or Vice Principal.
-
Important information
needs to be collected: student information and health history, family
contact information, emergency contact information, consent forms,
copy of birth certificate, immunization records, etc.
-
Application for
admission submitted - all paperwork to be completed
-
Review of relevant
materials (report cards, psycho-educational assessments, IEP or other
educational issues) will be completed by Sommerville administrators
-
Student assessment
visit whereby the student attends regular classes with Sommerville
students for one or two days. This presents many opportunities to
assess the child within the environment in which they will be learning
if their application is accepted, it also offers an opportunity to the
child to discover more about Sommerville
-
In the higher grades the
student will complete an entrance assessment to determine
capability in Language Arts and Mathematics. In order to be considered
for admission to Sommerville, the student's language proficiency
must be fluent and age appropriate as we do not offer any ESL
programs.
-
Students applying for
admission to the higher grades will need to have their current school
complete a Confidential School Report form which is mailed
directly to Sommerville from the student's current school.
-
An
application fee of $50 must
be submitted with the application for each family to cover the cost of
processing the application.
Once we have affirmed the primary goal,
then the student is offered a place in the school if there are available
places at the required grade level. If no places are available, the
child's name can be added to a waiting list for that grade.
Registration
Once a child has been offered a place, the
registration process begins:
-
Official records from your child's
previous school need to be obtained
-
Uniform order form (or order
online) which needs to be
given directly to Beatties.
-
You will be given a parent handbook and
the behaviour management plan booklet
-
$1000 non-refundable deposit that will
be applied toward school fees
Once the student begins attending the
school, it is important during this transition process that parents and
school staff remain in close contact. Any concerns, questions, or
successes should be communicated and addressed in a timely manner.
