Students

It is our policy at Sommerville Manor to encourage students to be accountable for their own behaviour.  High behaviour standards are expected in class, in all areas of the school and in all areas representing the school.  Behavioural guidelines are stated clearly and positively throughout all aspects of school life.  It is not our aim to develop regimented obedience but rather to encourage an understanding and acceptance of appropriate social behaviour. Our long term goal is to equip each student with the skills needed for self control, social competence and empathy with others, along with leadership opportunities, self confidence and a positive self-image.

Sommerville has a Colour House System which is designed to incorporate every student and every teacher in the school. At the beginning of the school year, both staff and students are divided into four teams, with students from every grade level on each team. Throughout the year there are a variety of Colour House activities for everyone to enjoy. The purpose of having Colour Houses is to establish relationships between students of all ages and to create school spirit. Points awarded through each activity are cumulative, and ribbons are presented to the winning team at the end of the year.

Each year the students elect representatives to serve on the Student Council which is a group of students who represent the entire student body of the school and work together to raise school spirit and community awareness. During the year the Student Council members will organize various events for children in all levels of the school. For the younger children there is a Haunted House for Halloween and for the older students, a dance in the gymnasium. Charity fundraisers, such as Toys for Tots and Food Drives for a local food bank are always very high on their list of priorities and they work hard to encourage the spirit of giving to those in need within the school community.

The most noticeable trait among the students of Sommerville is that is our students are happy to be in school, a fact that is often commented upon by visiting parents. The warm, family atmosphere within the school creates a sense of belonging and comfort for our students and it is in such an environment that they are happy to learn, each and every day of the school year.
