March 2011

Spring Term

I would like to offer a warm welcome back to everyone as we return from a much needed March break. I hear that the weather was just beautiful for most of the week and I am sure that everyone really enjoyed being outside in the beautiful sunshine. The most important thing is that everyone is now very well rested and ready to embark on the final term of the year.

It was good to see so many parents in the school for Parent-Teacher Interviews prior to the March Break.  Judging by the many report cards I read, the children are doing very well and you should be very proud of their accomplishments.

Hockey Season

In sports right now it is Floor Hockey season and we have three tournaments taking place in the next couple of weeks. We wish all of our athletes and their coaches the very best of luck in their games and I will report on their successes in the next newsletter.

The Ice Hockey team had an amazing season that concluded with their 5th place finish in their tournament in Stouffville. The team should be very proud of themselves as they posted the first victory in Sommerville’s history in their last game with a thrilling 6-5 win. The tournament and exhibition games were a great success as all players improved their skills and teamwork throughout the season. This would not have been possible without our committed parents who helped driving to our practices and cheered us on at our games and tournament. A huge thanks goes to our coaches who helped the players this year at practice and during our games: Mr. Small, Mr. DeOliveira and Mr. Sumeray, and our teacher-coaches Mr. Blakely, Mr. McDermid, Mr. Deaken, Mr. Cook and Mr. Hincks.  Be sure to check out our video of the season on the main website to see the team in action!

Math Competitions

During the next month we have some interesting Math activities happening. A selected group of students from grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be participating in the Math Competitions on April 13th. Mr. Hincks will be working with these students in preparation for this special event.

The following week, on April 20th, the students who participate in our Enriched Student Success Programme (ESSP) for Math will be presenting a Math Fair. The students have been working on their projects with Mr. Cook for sometime now, and from what I have heard, it sounds like they have come up with some very interesting math presentations. The projects will be on display around the school on April 20th, so when you come in for pick-up that day be sure to take a few minutes to check out their projects; they could astound you!

From Mrs. Meech

Sommerville once again held our Used Book Sale for Charity on March 7th, 8th and 9th. We would like to thank the numerous families who generously donated books to make this event possible. Also we would like to thank everyone who purchased books from the sale to help us raise funds. This year we raised $718, all of which will be donated to the hospital for Sick Children on your behalf. It is always so rewarding to witness the way Sommerville families respond to helping those less fortunate. Thank you everyone for your tremendous support of our Charity Used Book Sale.
