Cool Weather Approaches
|
|
| If I had been writing this a couple of weeks ago I would have been commenting on the wintery weather and how it had arrived all too soon. But thankfully that cold snap disappeared and we have been enjoying the most beautiful fall weather recently and it has been just glorious! However, in the not too distant future the temperatures will begin to drop as we slide towards the colder wintry weather. In light of this, I would just like to remind parents that the children are outside several times each day and should be well equipped for whatever weather we encounter throughout the school day. Every child should have a jacket in school, and it might be a good idea for them to keep a pair of gloves in school too – just for those days when it turns really cool outside. Please make sure that all articles of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name. |

Sommerville Spirit & Sportsmanship
|
|
|
Since my last newsletter went out, we have had sports teams attending PSAA tournaments in both Soccer and Cross Country Running. Mr. Deaken would like to congratulate the Junior/Intermediate Boys Soccer Team on a fantastic season and an exceptional tournament performance. The sportsmanship, leadership and camaraderie exemplified by every individual was more than impressive. Great job.
The Cross Country team lit the trail on fire this year. As a smaller school we held our own having 5 runners in the top 20 positions and securing a 4th place division title in the under 14 (girls) category. The cross country team represented Sommerville Manor phenomenally, saturated in sweat which clearly reflected their work ethic while displaying outstanding sportsmanship! Mr. McDermid is beyond impressed and hopes to see everyone (and many more) next year. Remember, “heart” is what defines a champion, not ribbons or medals!
Congratulations to all of our athletes and their coaches who worked so hard to prepare for these tournaments. On behalf of us all, thank you for representing our school so well. |

September and October are traditionally pretty busy months for field trips, and there are quite a few on the calendar this year too:
At the beginning of October, our grade 8 classes spent three days at Camp Wanakita – and what a great time they had there! Camp Wanakita is an outdoor educational centre, and the students experienced many different kinds of activities during their time at camp. To Ms. Dow and Mr. Deaken, who accompanied the students on their trip, my thanks for taking the students on a great trip, and my congratulations on surviving!!
This week the JK to grade 2 students enjoyed a wonderful day out at Stonehaven Farm which I am told is a small family-style farm that is well worth a visit. While they were there the children learned all about farming machinery (and went for a ride on the tractor) and how pumpkins are grown. Then each child was invited to pick their own mini pumpkin and gourd from the pumpkin patch and each class was given a big pumpkin for their classroom. Great fun was had by all as they explored the straw maze and played in the giant sandbox. What a great day!
Last week the grade 3’s and 4’s went to the Ontario Science Centre where they spent the day exploring so many different wonders. The grade 4 classes watched an Imax movie called ‘Under the Sea’ and then spent the day participating in a programme called Action Earth. They enjoyed activities that were based on energy conservation and protecting the environment.
The grade 3 class also watched an Imax movie which was called ‘Legends of Flight’ and their programme was based on Forces Causing Movement. They had great fun exploring different kinds of forces, such as friction and gravity. Then they participated in an activity in which they had to build an obstacle course that employed various kinds of forces and movement. Sounds like lots of fun to me!

High School Night
Next week Mr. Wu will be hosting the annual High School Information Night at 7pm in the Library on Wednesday November 3rd. All Grade 8 parents and students are invited to attend to hear about their choices and discuss some tips for seeking out a high school that will be a good fit for their child. Some of the parents of our past students will be on hand to provide some insight based on their experiences in having children going from grade 8 to 9. It is an evening not to be missed.
Ottawa Trip
Ottawa Trip 2011. Information for this trip has already gone home with our grade 7 and 8 students. All forms are due back to the home room teachers on Monday November 15th. An important meeting has been scheduled at which a representative from the tour company will be available to answer questions and provide more information about the trip. This meeting will take place on Tuesday November 9th at 7 pm in the school library. All grade 7/8 parents are encouraged to attend this important meeting to learn more about this great trip. If you have any questions prior to the information night, please speak to Mr. Cook.
Christmasfest
Mr. James and Miss Gurnham are already thinking ahead to Christmas, and the plans for our annual Christmasfest concert will soon be underway. This year our Christmas concert will take place a week earlier than usual due to the fact that the theatre will be closing down for renovations on December 10th. It is really important that you let Mr. James know as soon as possible if your child is not going to be here for the concert on December 9th. All students from JK to Grade 5 will be participating in the show this year as well as the school choirs, so it is important that we are aware of any child who will be unable to participate. Once again this year it promises to be a very exciting and successful Christmasfest.

From Mrs. Meech in the library: Mark your calendar now – Book Fair is fast approaching!! This year’s Scholastic Book Fair will take place in the library during the week of November 22nd. This is a great opportunity to encourage student reading, purchase gifts prior to Christmas, and support the school at the same time. Parents and students will have several opportunities to peruse this year’s selections. We do rely heavily on student and parent involvement during the Book Fair. I always have numerous student volunteers to help out at Book Fair, however it is essential that we also have parent volunteers to help with cash, security and supervision. We need most of our volunteers during lunch hours (11:30 am – 1:00 pm and, after school (3:00 pm – 4:30 pm). Please call the office and leave your name and availability with Mrs. Francis or sign up on the chart in the school foyer. Thank you so much for your support in this great event.
