Canadian Tests of Basic Skills
In
the spring each year, the students at Sommerville complete the CTBS
testing in mathematics and language; this includes students in all classes from
Senior Kindergarten to grade 8. The
Canadian Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS) provide objective,
norm-referenced information about elementary students' development in the
skills that are long-term goals of elementary education - skills that
constitute a major part of the foundation for continued learning. The
primary purpose for using a standardized achievement battery is to provide
information that can be used to enhance instructional decisions made by
educators. The
CTBS is a collection of tests in several subject areas that have
all been standardized with the same group of students. That is, the norms for
all tests have been obtained from a single group of students at each grade
level. Norms allow students to be compared with other students of the same age
and grade level across Canada. Such comparisons afford the opportunity for a
school to look at the achievement levels of its students in relation to a
nationally-representative student group. Thus, teachers and administrators get
an "external" look at the performance of their students, one that is
independent of the school's own assessments of student learning. Three
of the fundamental purposes for testing are:
1. to describe each student's development level within a test area
2. to identify a student's areas of relative strength and weakness
in the tested areas 3. to monitor year-to-year growth of students in important academic areas The
results of the Canadian Test of Basic
Skills (CTBS) which the students completed in April 2008, have been
tabulated and graphs prepared. These graphs depict the results achieved by
Sommerville students in the areas of Reading,
Language and Math. The
graphs have been prepared using the Grade Equivalent (GE) - A Grade
Equivalent score indicates where a student's test performance falls along an
achievement continuum. The GE estimates a student's developmental level; it
does not provide a prescription for grade placement. A GE that is much higher or
lower than the student's grade level is mainly a sign of exceptional
performance. The graphs make it obvious, at a glance that Sommerville students are performing well above grade level in the areas of Math, Language and Reading. We are very proud of the results our children have achieved. 2008 CTBS Results for Sommerville Manor Students
