The Physical Education programme at Sommerville is based on the philosophy, “A Healthy mind in a healthy body”. Our aim is to help students understand that physical fitness is an integral part of overall well-being. Students are encouraged to have a positive attitude towards physical activity and focus on the enjoyment of sports rather than on the competitiveness of the game.
At the Primary level, students participate in activities that will enhance their personal level of physical growth and development. Students are provided with opportunities which will develop physical skills, social interaction skills and a positive self image.
In the Junior and Intermediate grades the students challenge themselves in their abilities; they develop self-discipline and gain an appreciation of co-operation and fair play. Participation in Phys. Ed. classes provides a significant number of learning opportunities in the development of personal attributes and interpersonal skills.
While we encourage complete enjoyment in team sports, we do recognize the importance of competitive teams. In order that we can provide our students with a competitive sports experience, Sommerville is an active member of the Private School Athletic Association (PSAA). Through this association, one-day tournaments are organized in various sports, with competition taking place between individual Private Schools.
